    Description

    The presented specimen weighs 2.3 ounces. From the Cambrian period,
    Conasauga formation and recently discovered near Rome, Georgia. Studies suggest that "Brooksella" was a lobed sponge. Early farming in the area sometimes unearthed the creature and they were known as "star cobbles". They usually have between 5 and 8 lobes with some examples having many more. Specimens have a width of between 1 and 4 inches. Several online articles have discussed their occurrence in Floyd County Georgia and Cherokee County Alabama. Past literature suggested that they might have been jellyfish casts, burrow or feeding trace casts, or even pseudo-fossils. Thanks for looking!
