Description
Scarce original divided-back real-photo postcard of a scene aboard the freighter S.S. Heredia, circa 1908–1918, unposted. A touch of mild handling wear (period identifying ink caption to reverse), and some very faint, fine scratching to negative (original to item), otherwise clean and near fine overall. The image, in long perspective, depicts several crew members in uniform on deck, one aiming a large hose over the side. Launched in 1908 for the Tropical Fruit SS Co Ltd (United Fruit) of Glasgow, the Heredia was transferred to the U.S. in 1914. Renamed the General Pershing for States SS Co. in 1933, the vessel returned to the original owner (and name) in 1937. In 1942, en route from Galveston to New Orleans with a cargo of fruit, the Heredia was torpedoed by a German U-boat in the Gulf of Mexico and sank within three minutes, claiming 36 lives.
A rare image, likely a unique survival; I was unable to locate a single other example.
NON-U.S. BIDDERS:
Please note that I ship outside the U.S.
ONLY
via eBay's Global Shipping Program.
IMPORTANT NEW NOTE ON SHIPPING--PLEASE READ.
I'm not a fan of fine print and disclaimers, but a number recent developments have contributed to likely delays in shipping:
1) Recent changes at the USPS have resulted in longer shipping times, particularly to more distant destinations (i.e., the south, midwest, and west). Please take this into account. I generally ship using the least expensive class that's appropriate, but I will gladly make arrangements for expedited shipping upon request. If there are any issues with delays/tracking, please contact me immediately—I am happy to assist.
2) Most sellers are now required to enroll in eBay's Managed Payments program. As part of this program,
eBay holds every buyer's payment for two business days before releasing it to the seller.
This means that if you pay late on a Thursday night, your payment will not clear until at least Tuesday. If you pay on a Monday morning, your payment will not clear until at least Wednesday. Again, please take this into account.
In case of any issues or problems, please contact me before opening a request or dispute.
As my long feedback record makes clear, I strive to provide accuracy in descriptions, great care in packaging and shipping, and excellent customer service.
Contacting me directly first to resolve questions or issues greatly speeds up the process and ensures greatest satisfaction.
